FIFA WORLD CUP The 18th Edition Germany, 9 June - 9 July 2006 |

FIFA is again organizing the 18th edition of the World Cup, a competition which joins all the national teams in the world in trying to qualify for the final stages of the tournament, which then crowns one nation as the World Champion. The first edition was held in 1930 in Uruguay but a lot of European nations boycotted the competition on the grounds that it was not being held in Europe (football's birth place) and due to the long distance to travel by sea to arrive at the hosting venues (at least a month travel).
Since that edition the competition was held every four years with the exception of the 12 year period (1938-1950) of the Second World War. For the first nine editions (1930-1970) the price was the Rimet Cup, named after the father of the competition - Jules Rimet. In the 1970 the cup was won by Brazil for the third time and therefore they won the cup for ever. Since then a new cup was made - the FIFA cup.
For the second time, the World Cup is being hosted in Germany, the first time as Germany since in 1974 the country was still West Germany. Germany won the World Cup three times in 1954, 1974 and 1990, all of them as West Germany. |

The mascot of this edition is the lion GOLEO VI, dressed in the traditional white shirt of the German National team. He is accompanied by PILLE the talking ball. Controversy has been brewing around Goleo since the lion has no connection whatsoever with Germany whilst the eagle is the national symbol. |
